Young 7Ib claiming Wexford rider Conor Walsh advertised his talents as course-specialist War Of The Pennys (a nicely backed 9/1 shot) got Don Cashman off the mark in the training ranks when taking the Chia Bia Handicap Hurdle at Tramore.
Another Model County pilot, Jonathan Moore, put it up to them from the front here aboard Mysticaltou
However War Of The Pennys, a close relative to the great War Of Attrition, enjoyed the patient steer he got from Walsh.
War Of The Pennys claimed the gallant pace-setting Mysticaltou at the last, and he went on to prevail by a comfortable enough length and three parts and the same from You Can't Catch Me and his aforementioned rival.
Rathgarogue, New Ross-based Cashman said: "That's my first track winner, I've had a few point-to-point winners. We always owned him, and he is the reason I got the licence. I only have the licence since May or June, so it took us a couple of runners to get off the mark, but we got there.
"I train just outside New Ross in Rathgarogue, so we didn't have far to travel. I have four or five for the track and a few more point-to-pointers.
"He was only ten lengths off them in Galway the last day, but maybe the speed has gone off him, it's been a few years since he done a good two mile time. He is hardy and he stays, he loves passing horses and he obviously loves this place. He is three from three now around here.
"He is declared for the 123 handicap on Sunday and he'll have a very light weight. We'll see, if he pulls out well on Sunday we might bring him on. We have another one to bring on Sunday, so we might bring him on too."
War Of The Pennys (previously a winner for the Mick Cullen yard) is owned by Cashman's partner Talitha Doran.
The Stewards enquired into an incident leaving the back straight involving Shutter Island ridden by M.P. Walsh, Coldstonesober ridden by K.C. Sexton, Herbiegoesbananas ridden by C. Brassil, and For Sinead ridden by B.Hayes. Evidence was heard from the riders concerned. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that the video evidence was inconclusive, they gave B.Hayes the benefit of the doubt and took no further action.
M.P. Walsh, rider of Shutter Island trained by Charles O'Brien, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount clipped heals and was almost brought down.
