Review PUNCHESTOWN 24TH APR

Mansony proved the star on day one of the Punchestown Festival when landing the featured Kerrygold Champion Chase for Davy Russell and Arthur Moore.

Just seven went to post after Martin Brassil decided there wasn't enough cut in the ground for Nickname, and Newmill was sent off the 13/8 favourite.

Mansony looked a forlorn home when unable to go the pace and still in rear three out as Newmill and Justified dominated up front.

However Russell's mount gradually pegged back the leaders, and met the last on a great stride before quickening up on the far rail to beat Justified by 1 1/4L.

Steel Band ran a cracker to finish third, while Newmill held every chance but could find no extra approaching the last to finish fifth.

'I was hoping after halfway to finish in the first three at best but he really pinged the final two fences and must be a decent horse,' said Russell afterwards.

Offshore Account was a very fortunate winner of the Ellier Developments Hanover Quay Champion Novice Chase after Aces Four fell at the last when apparently set for victory.

The 6/4 favourite held a two lengths advantage and appeared to be going the better of the pair until meeting the final fence all wrong, giving Graham Lee a heavy fall.

He was taken to hospital for x-rays on a suspected fracture of an elbow.

The market was spot-on in the vcbet.com Champion Novice Hurdle as well-backed 7/4 favourite Clopf obliged, while the friendless Ebaziyan was a big disappointment.

The Dusty Sheehy-trained Rindoon set a strong pace under Mark Darcy and appeared to have all his rivals at full stretch until stablemate Holly Tree challenged entering the straight.

However Clopf soon got into top gear, leading after the last for Barry Geraghty to beat the trail-blazing Rindoon by a length and a half with Holly Tree just a neck further back.

The placings of the Sheehy-trained second and third were later reversed by the stewards following interference before the final hurdle.

'He didn't jump as well as I'd hoped, and before two out I'd half given up,' said Geraghty before adding, 'He picked up well in the straight, and actually didn't do a lot after he hit the front.'

Geraghty was seen at his best when completing a 40/1 plus double in the Evening Herald Handicap Hurdle aboard Charlies First.

The seven-year-old gelding answered every call from the former champion, heading On The Net in the closing stages to score by half a length.

'He wants that good ground and Barry gave him some ride,' said trainer Peter Casey, who will now set his sights on the Galway Festival.

Davy Condon was stood down for 21 days after suffering concussion when Streetshavenoname was brought down four out.

There was a real gamble landed in the Goffs Land Rover where Gonebeyondrecall, available at 12/1 in the morning before being backed down to 3/1 favourite, won in great style.

Derek O'Connor's mount asserted in the straight and, despite running green, stretched right away to beat Lifes Star by nine lengths.

Red Setter was prominent throughout in the Ladies Cup under Andrew Kinirons (19) before holding on by a diminishing neck from Wedger Pardy, and is likely to be seen in action again here later in the week.

Adrian Lane and trainer Pat Fahy successfully combined in the Gain Feeds Handicap Chase as Wills Wilde just held off Torrid Kentavr by a neck, while Logans Run quickened up nicely in the final furlong of the bumper for Adrian Joyce.

The attendance of 17,974 showed an increase of over 15% on the corresponding day last year.
