POWELL TO START NEXT WEEK

Brendan Powell is hoping to have his first runner as a trainer with Little Elk at Newton Abbot next Wednesday, it was revealed today.

The mare had been engaged in two races at Fontwell tomorrow but Powell, who is based at Twyford, Hampshire, felt she needed a little more time.

The former leading National Hunt jockey also had the Jack Berry-owned Royal Mascot in the bumper at Worcester on Saturday but he is set to miss the race.

Powell said: 'Little Elk came over from Ireland about a week ago and I felt she needed another week.

'She will go to Newton Abbot next Wednesday and hopefully she will be my first runner.

'I`m looking forward to it - as long as she runs all right!

'She`s nothing special - she won a little race over there a couple of years back - and she`s been sent over here to see if we can find a seller for her.'

Powell, who quit the saddle in June, is aiming to send out more runners in the coming weeks.

'I`ve got 14 in and another three or four to come in,' Powell added.

'I`ve got a couple of nice ones to run in three weeks to a month - Balsox and Watership Down.

'And I`ve got a two-year-old that will run in a fortnight called Tuscan that was second in a seller at Bath for Mick Channon last time.

'She was claimed and sent here. I won`t improve her on Mick Channon and if she could run as well as that I`d be happy.'
