POWELL OFF THE MARK AT KEMPTON

Grand National-winning jockey Brendan Powell gained his first success as a trainer when My Galliano triumphed in the last race at Kempton today.

Powell retired from his career in the saddle - which was highlighted by his victory on Rhyme `N` Reason at Aintree in 1988 - during the summer and trains a mixed team of 23 at Moresetead Stables, near Winchester, Hants.

'That was good, worth waiting for,' said Powell after My Galliano had battled back under Liam Corcoran to secure the NSPCC Conditional Jockeys` Novice Handicap Hurdle.

'We`ve run eight individual horses, but a lot of them have been first time out and babies. They`ve run well and I can`t complain. Most of them are good ground horses.'

In between being showered with congratulations, Powell continued: 'I bought My Galliano about a month ago from Martin Lynch after he ran at Punchestown.

'He`s owned by Les and Jan Gilbert, who live near me and always said they`d have a horse with me when I started training.

'I`m also very pleased that Liam rode him. I`ve known him from his days at Mark Pitman`s and he comes down and schools for me once a week. He`s a smashing rider who should get more opportunities.

'I`d love to give every lad in the weighing room a ride, I wish I had 100 horses and I`d give them all a go.'
