PIPE EYES CHAMPION FOR STAND

Make A Stand, winner of the 1997 Smurfit Champion Hurdle, could make his comeback in this year's renewal, it emerged today.

Martin Pipe's game front-runner, who graduated from novice to champion in one season, has not been seen out since finishing third in the Martell Aintree Hurdle 34 months ago but the champion trainer had some good news of his charge.

In an interview at Cheltenham racecourse he said: "Make A Stand is not ready to run yet but he's bombing up the gallops and hopefully we'll be able to get him to Cheltenham in one piece to take on Istabraq.

"We've got six weeks to go."
