Lester Piggott was honoured today for his contribution to racing over the years at the fourth Sir Peter O`Sullevan Annual Award Lunch at the Savoy Hotel, London.
Piggott received a bronze of O`Sullevan`s binoculars from the Queen Mother`s private secretary Sir Alastair Aird, presenting the trophy on her behalf.
The recipient of the award was decided upon by Jockey Club senior steward Christopher Spence, Horserace Writers Association president John Sexton, the recipient of last year`s award the Queen Mother and O`Sullevan himself.
The dinner, attended by 380 guests, and an auction of nine paintings donated by various artists helped raise #97,600 for charity.
Cantor Index, Allied Irish Bank, Laing & Cruickshank, London Clubs, Moet & Chandon and Arena Leisure sponsored the event.
