PETRUSHKA POWERS TO CURRAGH GLORY

Johnny Murtagh added to his Classic collection as British raider Petrushka trotted up in the IR£200,000 Kildangan Stud Irish Oaks at the Curragh today.

Sir Michael Stoute's charge, an 11-2 chance, stormed to the front with more than a furlong to travel and ran on strongly to defeat the Godolphin runner Melikah (2-1 favourite) by five and a half lengths.

Inforapenny (100-1) ran far better than expectations to make it a one-two-three for the British raiders.

Murtagh was completing the Irish Derby-Oaks double, having landed the first leg with Sinndar.

The revitalised jockey, who stepped in for the ride because Kieren Fallon was injured and second choice Pat Eddery was suspended, also won the Vodafone Derby at Epsom aboard Sinndar.

Petrushka was returning to the form she showed when an impressive winner of the Nell Gwyn Stakes on her seasonal debut.

The filly, owned by Highclere Thoroughbred Racing, was a disappointing third when hot favourite for the 1000 Guineas and then finished fourth in the Vodafone Oaks at Epsom.
