Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe runner-up El Condor Pasa has been crowned "horse of the year" by the Japan Racing Association.
The now-retired five-year-old was also voted top older horse after a memorable 1999 campaign in France.
Prior to his half-length second to Montjeu at Longchamp in October, he won the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and the Prix Foy and finished second in the Prix d'Ispahan.
El Condor Pasa has since been retired to stud at the Shadai stallion station on the island of Hokkaido.
