Sophie’s World, who was the outsider of the five for the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Handicap, landed the spoils for local trainer Kevin O’Donnell, under young seven-pound claimer Sean Corby.
Available at 20/1 last night, the victorious daughter of Captain Rio opened on-course at 10/1, and went off at that price.
Having her seventh career start and her third in handicap company, the bay filly tracked the leaders in 3rd, before being ridden to lead a furlong out.
She kept on well under pressure from there, and had to battle all the way to the line to see off the challenge of Kanes Pass (5/1) by a neck. Sparkle Factor was sent off the 11/10 favourite but she could only manage a disappointing third, while Glassatura lost her chance at the start after she broke very slowly from the stalls.
Sean Corby said afterwards: “She travelled away well and when we turned in I got a nice gap but I didn’t want to get there too soon.
"I always thought I had Wayne (on Kanes Pass) covered, and she kept on well.”
The alternative handicap came into play for this contest, with top weight Slipper Orchid a non-runner due to the change in going.
