There was drama at the final flight in the three-mile maiden hurdle at Thurles with Wise Oscar picking up the pieces. Jack Bene and Saved By John approached the last together but the former fell leaving his rival in front.
He started to falter on the run-in, however, and Wise Oscar responded to a strong drive from Barry Cash to get his head in front in the closing stages for a length success.
"He's been a bit unlucky but also a little disappointing," said trainer Karl Wyse of the winner afterwards.
"We thought the world of him as a three and four-year-old. He might go to Limerick and then maybe Punchestown while chasing is his aim in the autumn."
It was a first winner as an owner for the trainers brother Paul, in whose colours he ran.
