Old Soul off the mark over fences Runner-up to subsequent winner Queen Jane over course and distance on his previous start, Old Soul (15/2) went one better in the Ballymacarbry LGFC Race Evening Beginners Chase. Always prominent, the Montmartre six-year-old led racing down the back straight, where two fences were omitted due to ground conditions, on the final circuit. He was good for Richie Deegan over the last two fences and stayed on well to account for Takarengo by three and a quarter lengths. Winning trainer Liz Doyle said: "He really is a three-miler so it shows how awful that ground is. He was the only horse that absolutely handles it and while it is bad on the inside, is much better to the left. Richie (Deegan) had walked it and we agreed to go wide. "He is a sound horse, that family have been good to me and it's nice to have another win." "Hopefully going 3m4f might eventually be his thing as he has just one gear. Whether we get our ground again before the end of the season, I don't know. He won't run for the sake of it and we'll see what the man upstairs does with the weather." Quotes from Tom Weekes
