The Outback Way fared best of two British runners by finishing a creditable third in the Nakayama Grand Jump in Japan today.
Venetia Williams' charge, ridden by Norman Williamson, was beaten five and three quarter lengths by the local hope and 1.9-1 favourite, Gokai.
The Outback Way earned over #100,000 for connections with his third place.
Miss Williams said: "I'm delighted. It was fantastic. I thought we had a chance through the final turn. The jockey rode very well."
However, Charlie Mann's Celibate was not so fortunate as he unseated Carl Llewellyn when still full of running in the 16-runner contest.
The race, run over a distance of about two and a half miles, was open to foreign horses for the very first time and no less than seven took part.
Francois Doumen's Boca Boca (Thierry Doumen), one of two French runners, went closest by finishing three-quarters of a length second at odds of over 25-1.
The other New Zealand, French, American and Irish runners, Maybe Rough, Sydney Opera, Ninepins and Hill Society, were fifth, sixth, ninth and 10th respectively.
