O'Brien Goes In Search Of More Glory At Breeders' Cup Ballydoyle's Aidan O'Brien has just broken legendary trainer Bobby Frankel's single season world record of 25 Group One winners following a spectacular year. The Champion Trainer drew equal with Frankel's record with Hydrangea, who was first past the post at the Ascot Qipco British Champions Day in the Fillies & Mares stakes a week ago. And after last Saturday’s Racing Post Trophy in Doncaster where 13-8 Saxon Warrior beat Roaring Lion, O’Brien is once again the new world record holder. The Master trainer first broke the record 16 years ago with 23 Group 1 winners in a single year, but was surpassed with Frankel’s 25 in 2003. In an interview with ITV following Saxon Warrior’s triumph, O’Brien described his new world record as ”unbelievable” and stated “I’m delighted and delighted for everybody”. It’s certainly an achievement for the Irish trainer, but he wouldn’t have got there without some very special horses! Saxon Warrior — The Japanese-bred Saxon Warrior became O’Brien’s record-breaking horse on Saturday 28th October. The 2 year-old colt maintained his unbeaten record in thrilling fashion on Saturday, where he was rallied by jockey Ryan Moore to win the Racing Post Trophy by a neck having been headed by the runner-up entering the final furlong. Order of St George — Already a champion racehorse, 5 year-old Order of St George is a specialist stayer with wins including the Ascot Gold Cup and two Irish St Legers. Part of O’Brien’s stable since 2014, in November 2016 the colt was named Champion Stayer at the Cartier Racing Awards. He gained his second St Leger win at Curragh on September 10th, taking the lead three furlongs in and winning by a total of nine lengths. Hydrangea - The 3 year-old bay filly by Galileo has impressed O’Brien this year, the Master trainer described her as having “been on the go all year and has got better and better”. Her victory at the Qipco British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes in Ascot last month took O’Brien’s season wins to the record level of 25. Ridden by Ryan Moore she overtook the favourite Bateel and won the race by two lengths. Caravaggio — This 3-year old colt surprised Ballydoyle when he lost his unbeaten record in the Newmarket July Cup this year, but he’d already played his part in securing a Group One victory for the stable by winning the Commonwealth Cup at Ascot on June 23rd. Winter — Another filly by Galileo, this 3-year-old won the 1000 Guineas in her fifth race. She was responsible for four of O’Brien’s Group One wins this year, including a double Ascot win with Caravaggio in the Coronation Stakes on June 23rd, and the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood. Despite being Ireland’s newest world record holder O’Brien is not resting on his laurels and has dispatched a team of 14 horses to the US for this weekend’s Breeder’s Cup in California. Among them is the double 2000 Guineas winner, Churchill, who is set to race against defending champion Arrogate for the $6 million Classic, one race that has so far alluded the master trainer. Dual Grade 1 winner Happily will attempt to add to her tally in Friday’s Juvenile Fillies Turf while other star names from Ballydoyle competing over the weekend include Rhododendron (Filly And Mare Turf) and Highland Reel (Longine Breeders’ Cup Turf).
