NOVICE BOOSTS BRENNAN

Churchstanton completed a hat-trick over fences to boost his under-strength trainer Owen Brennan.

The eight-year-old continued his climb to chasing`s upper reaches with a sparkling display in the Fund For Epilepsy Novices` Chase at Wetherby.

Churchstanton`s promise is a relief to Brennan who has only eight horses fit to race over jumps.

'Several of the horses I train for Lady Anne Bentinck are injured so it`s a bit of a relief to have one as good as this to keep us going through the winter,' he said.

Wetherby is one of Brennan`s favourite courses and he had little cause to change his view after Churchstanton`s spring-heeled performance.

He jumped like an old hand and already had the race in the bag when putting in a super leap at the final obstacle.

Tony Dobbin allowed his mount to coast home on the run-in but he was still eight lengths ahead of Narrow Water at the line.

Churchstanton was schooled by Brennan`s son Martin who has quit riding in this country to work in Dubai.

'Martin`s done a good job and he went away because he decided there wasn`t enough for him here to earn a living. The way this one`s going he might want to come back,' said the trainer.

Brennan is hoping Churchstanton might be good enough to tackle the Royal & Sun Alliance Chase at Cheltenham.

In the meantime, Churchstanton could be pitted against experienced handicappers in the Rowland Meyrick at Wetherby`s Christmas meeting.

'I will certainly pop him in the race to have a look,' said Brennan. 'It`s tough taking on seasoned handicappers but he does jump well.'

Function Dream is set to tackle the Castleford Chase at the same meeting after securing her third success of the campaign in the Cumbrian Challenge Handicap Chase.

The mare defied a 12lb weights rise for her victory over the course last month when she denied Inn At The Top by three-quarters of a length.

Function Dream had looked poised to win easily but in the end was all out to hold on at the end of two and a half miles.

The Castleford Chase is over two miles and Reveley said: 'That should suit her well. I certainly wouldn`t want her to go any further than two and a half although it was sticky ground.'

For a race worth just £4,940 to the winner, the Rocom Handicap Hurdle was an extremely competitive affair.

In the end it fell to Jonjo O`Neill`s Barrelbio but there was plenty of drama on the way.

The favourite Supreme Fortune unseated his rider at the fifth flight then Just Lizzie, in front at the time, crashed at the second last.

Dhaudeloup looked the likely winner for much of the race as he travelled strongly on the bridle but he found little when let down and was unable to peg back Barrelbio from the final hurdle.

O`Neill, who revealed that the talented but injury-prone Legal Right will not be ready for the Tripleprint Gold Cup at Cheltenham next Saturday, had not been confident.

'I just thought the ground would be too sticky for my horse today,' he said.

Premier Drive shrugged off top-weight to defeat Mr Hornblower by 10 lengths in the ATS Novices` Handicap Hurdle.

The seven-year-old was bought by George Moore for 13,000 guineas at the Doncaster Sales after being recommended to him by his son Garry, an employee of the Coolmore Stud, who spotted the horse in Ireland.

Dobbin completed a double as Freetown secured his fourth victory on the trot with an easy win in the Wetherby Racecourse Banqueting Novices` Hurdle.
