Dermot Weld's Profound Beauty remains on-course for a second tilt at the Melbourne Cup in November following an impressive win in the Group 3 Ballyroan Stakes at Leopardstown today, ,a race which saw English St Leger candidate Mourayan finish second.
Following the win, Weld stated “that was a very impressive performance from Profound Beauty. She was very fit and very right for today's race but the runner-up (Mourayan) may just have needed the run.”
He added “the race panned out well for us and she'll run in the Irish St Leger next. The Melbourne Cup remains a possibility in November but her participation will depend on how we are treated by the Australian handicapper!”
Bookmakers Willam Hill cut Profound Beauty to 14/1 (from 16/1) for the Australian centrepiece.
John Oxx, trainer of runner-up Mourayan, was pleased with his colt's run, his first since finishing third in the Irish Derby in June.
Oxx said “Mourayan ran a very good race and the winner is a good filly. The ground was probably plenty fast for him and he'd appreciate more of an ease and a longer trip. The plan is still to go for the St Leger at Doncaster.”
