Review GALWAY 31ST JUL

English raider Uhoomagoo flew home in the closing stages to land the feature Michael McNamara & Co Builders Handicap on the final day of the Galway festival.

The Kevin Ryan-trained gelding was always in rear in the 100,000 event and had only a few behind turning for home.

Neil Callan conjured a terrific burst of acceleration inside the final furlong, however, and he shot through to get the better of Senators Alibi by a length-and-a-half.

'He's been a great little horse for me,' said Ryan afterwards. 'We thought the race might be run to suit and that they would go very quick. He comes off the pace well.'

Homegrown became the second horse this week to double up at the festival when landing the Galway Fairgreen Hotel Handicap.

Pat Tallis' improving filly secured her fourth straight victory when cruising into the lead around the home bend and pulling away for a three-and-a-half length win over Boumoussa.

Ruby Walsh landed both the hurdles on the card with contrasting rides on Rooftop Protest and Millanymare.

Rooftop Protest was well backed in the morning, for the Tara Towers Hotel Handicap Hurdle, and was sent off 7/2f. Punters had few worries as he secured a comfortable five-length success after being prominent throughout.

Walsh was content to bide his time on Millanymare (100/30f) in the Corrib Villeage Handicap Hurdle and still had plenty of ground to make up from the third last. He crept into contention with ease and led at the last before going on for a six-length win.

Ghlaisebhui stayed out of trouble to land an incident packed Mercer Court Beginners Chase while Dermot Weld made it eight for the week when Motafarred made all to justify odds of 2/5 in the Mercer Hotel Race.

The attendance for the day was down, with 15,828 through gates as opposed to 17,372 last year. Figures for the week (including infield) showed a healthy increase, however, with 210,120 attending this year as opposed to 198,000 in 2004.

Sean Levey was the star at Cork when partnering his first winner aboard Aidan O'Brien's Beauty Bright in the opening two-year-old maiden.

The 17-year-old, who is originally from Swaziland, showed a cool head to repel the challenge of I Key, by half a length, on the 4/6 shot.

Apprentices stole the show at the Mallow track with Japanese claimer Atsuo Hatta also shining when partnering his second winner aboard More Votes in the Derrinstown Stud Apprentice Handicap.

Keith Maher had his claim reduced to 7lb when Nathan Jones took the corkracecourse.ie Handicap while Billy Lee was on board Womans Chat, who claimed the Fillies Maiden for Tommy Stack.
