Tom McCourt has given an update on two of his Galway contenders who would both welcome a drop of rain over Ballybrit.

Charming Star has won on the Flat in Listowel and over flights at Navan where he relished testing ground.

"I shouldn't have run Charming Star in Downpatrick (remote third in a rated novice hurdle), I was trying to get a run into him before Galway. He wouldn't let himself down on the fast ground there," the trainer said.

"He's a horse that definitely wants ground with soft in it. If it turns up that way, we have been aiming at the two mile handicap on the Flat on the Wednesday.

"If there is no soft in the description, he won't go."

McCourt is also preparing Rampage for Galway and he brings course form to the party as he was successful in an extended mile handicap last September. Although he handles better ground, it was soft ground he delivered on in Ballybrit.

He said: "Rampage would be our main one.

"He'll run on Tuesday in the 50-70 mile handicap. He won at the September meeting last year. He's on 68 so he should get in.

"That has been the aim for him all year.

"Course and distance form is very important down there."
