MURTAGH MAKES IT TEN

Leading Irish jockey Johnny Murtagh landed an incredible 10th Group One win of the season in the Racing Post Trophy when guiding Dilshaan to an impressive success.

Darwin, one of three Aidan O`Brien runners in the £175,000 contest which is run over the round mile, made the early running with Snowstorm and Dayglow Dancer racing in touch.

As the field headed down the straight Richard Hughes produced Tamburlaine travelling well on the outside and at the two-pole he kicked for home, catching many of his rivals flat-footed.

Tamburlaine looked to have victory in sight until Murtagh made his move down the middle of the track and, soon taking control, Dilshaan stayed on in determined fashion inside the final furlong to score by two and a lengths at 14-1.

Tamburlaine (11-4) held second place by three-quarters of a length from O`Brien`s 25-1 chance Bonnard.

The Ballydoyle trainer`s Freud, the 2-1 favourite, came home in fifth place.

Winning trainer Sir Michael Stoute was not surprised with the victory of Dilshaan, who had finished second at Sandown on his only previous start.

He said: 'I wasn`t confident he would win but I thought he was entitled to run and run well.

'He`s progressed a lot since his first race.

'He`s done it really nicely. He`s a horse with a lot of scope. He`s going to get more powerful and he`s an interesting prospect.'

Dilshaan earned quotes of 20-1 and 25-1 for the Sagitta 2000 Guineas.

However, Stoute added: 'He stays well - that`s the main thing. I would think he`ll need to run a bit further than a mile next year from the start.'

Murtagh said: 'When Richard Hughes quickened he got a couple of lengths on me but I always felt that when I gave my horse a smack he would stay well and I knew from the furlong-pole I was going to get him.'
