Montjeu won the Group One Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud in the style of a true champion at the French track this afternoon and now has Ascot's King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes firmly in his sights.
Owner Michael Tabor and trainer John Hammond elected for the stay at home option rather than the tougher assignment of the Coral-Eclipse Stakes at Sandown next Saturday - and the plan worked perfectly.
Last season's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner, who paid 1.20 francs on the Pari-Mutuel, was tucked in last of the four runners - his pacemaker Stop By leading in the early stages from 1998 Arc winner Sagamix and Daring Miss.
Cash Asmussen kept him last of the four runners until putting the others out of their misery after their home turn.
Sauntering into the lead on the outside past Sagamix, he quickened clear to slam Daring Miss by five lengths and was value for 10.
The Texan, standing in for regular jockey Mick Kinane, had ridden Montjeu to win the French and Irish Derbys last season.
"He's stronger than last year and in great form. Once he was in the straight he accelerated like a true machine," said Asmussen.
This was Montjeu's fifth Group One success and he will bid for number six at Ascot on July 29th.
