MONTJEU HEADS EUROPEAN ARRIVALS

Montjeu headed a group of arrivals at Churchill Downs today as the European team for the Breeder`s Cup gathered strength.

John Hammond`s four-year-old, now confirmed a runner in the Turf on Saturday, touched down in Louisville before dawn.

Also on the Transatlantic arrivals` list were the remainder of the British and French squads which included Amanda Perrett`s Indian Lodge and Barry Hills` Distant Music, who both tackle the Mile, Mark Johnston`s Fruits Of Love (Turf) and Godolphin`s Bertolini (Sprint) and Noverre (Juvenile).

The horses were taken straight to the quarantine barn and following between 24 and 36 hours in isolation, could step on the track some time tomorrow.

Churchill Downs now awaits the arrival of the 'iron horse', with Giant`s Causeway and up to seven others trained by Aidan O`Brien expected to arrive from Ireland tomorrow morning.

Crimplene, Clive Brittain`s first Breeder`s Cup challenger since Pebbles won in 1985, has been acclimatising in Kentucky since the middle of last week and the globe trotting three-year-old was handed further stalls practice this morning.

The triple Group One winner, who runs in the Distaff over nine furlongs on dirt, broke smartly from the gates and then worked over about three-quarters of a mile.

Brittain said: 'She`s very, very well. I`m not concerned about the trip, as she`s already won over 10 furlongs. And she`s raced on the dirt in Dubai so I`m not worried about the surface.

'There were reasons for her defeats in her last two races. The Deauville race probably came too soon for her after the Nassau, while the ground was too sticky for her at Ascot and she couldn`t quicken. You can forget about the Ascot race. She already has.'

Brittain is enjoying being back in the Breeder`s Cup spotlight 15 years after he sent over Pebbles to break the British duck in the series when taking the Turf at Aqueduct.

The Newmarket trainer said: 'I haven`t studied the opposition too closely. Obviously they`re no slouches, but I said I wouldn`t come back to the Breeder`s Cup until I had a horse good enough.'

Turf favourite Kalanisi gave his backers a scare as he showed signs of temperament and eventually dumped his rider while working at Churchill Downs.

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained colt balked while galloping alongside stable-companion Petrushka on Sunday and again several times before his work, apparently reacting to his unfamiliar surroundings.

When finally coaxed into a five-furlong workout he propped while galloping out on the first turn and dumped exercise rider Wally Lowsby, who held on to a rein while falling and managed to stop the colt running off.

Stoute blamed Kalanisi`s behaviour on his unfamiliarity with the sights and sounds of Churchill Downs.

'He had never been so confused before,' the trainer said. 'He can be a little bit of a character at home. There were a lot of distractions and up until now he`s been fine.

'He was just being a bit of a playboy today.

'Once he got moving, he really got down and stretched. He really likes running. He obviously likes a little bit of diversion, as well.'

Stoute`s Dubai Champion Stakes winner is 5-2 favourite with William Hill for Saturday`s Turf.
