MASSIVE BOOST FOR RACING CHARITY

A cheque for £1 million was presented to the Injured Jockeys Fund in Britain this morning on behalf of leading owner Robert Hitchins.

The donation, believed to be one of the largest given to a sporting charity, has been "ring fenced" so that the interest earned will ensure the survival of the annual IJF holiday in Tenerife.

The donation was presented on behalf of Hitchins at Manchester Airport by former trainer Jack Berry, who founded the holiday.

Former jockey Paddy Broderick, who partnered Night Nurse to two Champion Hurdle victories, received the cheque on behalf of the IJF.

The "Robert & Elizabeth Hitchins Holiday" provides former riders, many of them paraplegics, with rehabilitation treatment at the specialist Mar Y Sol complex in Tenerife.

This year a party of over 50 former jockeys and their carers travelled to Tenerife.
