George Margarson will decide on Thursday whether Barathea Guest will take his chance in the Lane's End Greenham Stakes at Newbury.
The Newmarket trainer has the option of going for Saturday's Group Three event with his Sagitta 2000 Guineas hope or contesting the thehorsesmouth.co.uk Craven Stakes at Newmarket the following Thursday.
Margarson said today: "He's semi-possible. His main aim is the Craven Stakes but I put him in because he does like the soft ground.
"So we're going to work him tomorrow and make our minds up on Thursday - dependent on the ground. If it's soft at Newbury, Distant Music might be frightened away along with one or two of the others.
"I wouldn't mind taking them on soft ground but they might be re-routed to the Craven which would give me an easier option for a prep for the Guineas.
"I would sooner go for the Craven to be honest but the Greenham is a week before so it gives us an extra break before the Guineas."
Barathea Guest finished first past the post in four of his five starts last season but was demoted to second after beating Ciro in the Grand Criterium at Longchamp on his final outing.
And Margarson believes the colt will be a force to be reckoned with in the Guineas.
"He's done very, very well, he's improved by an enormous amount. He was never the best of workers at home before but this year he's really thrived.
"He's done two serious pieces of work and he's come out of them in better form every time.
"He's no back-number in the Guineas, I believe he has a very strong chance.
"We had Speedfit Too a couple of years back, he finished seventh to King Of Kings in the Guineas, and I'd put this fellow a long way ahead of him, in temperament as well as ability.
"If it was the same sort of race as Speedfit Too ran in I'd be very confident you couldn't squeeze Barathea Guest out of the first three."
Barathea Guest is a 33-1 chance for the 2000 Guineas with Coral.
