KARIBA CAMPAIGN PLANNED

Lake Kariba will bid to show his surprise fifth place in the Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup was no fluke by running in the Martell Cup at Aintree and the Whitbread at Sandown next month.

The Winning Line's gelding, trained by Venetia Williams, started at 150-1 on his first run for four months at Cheltenham last Thursday yet was beaten under six lengths behind Looks Like Trouble under Norman Williamson.

Stephen Winstanley, spokesman for the owners, said today: 'We were thrilled with his performance.

'We bought him because we felt that he could stay three miles-plus and having had a wind operation following his run over hurdles he seemed to be back to his best.

'He must have a great chance at Liverpool and he looks to be well in at the weights in the Whitbread. Norman Williamson also felt that the horse could come on for the run as he has had very little racing over the last 12 months.'

Lake Kariba could face a rematch in the Martell Cup with Looks Like Trouble, who was reported 'a 6-4 chance' to run in the race by trainer Noel Chance today.
