Godolphin`s hotly-fancied Fantastic Light finished only fourth in the Grade One Turf Classic at Belmont Park in New York last night.
Frankie Dettori`s mount, sent off 7-5 favourite after winning the Man O`War Stakes on the same course last month, was never able to challenge and came home three and a half lengths behind veteran winner John`s Call.
Trainer Saeed bin Suroor blamed a slow pace for the defeat of his colt who remains on course for next month`s Breeders` Cup Turf - for which he had been ante-post favourite.
John`s Call may be supplemented for the Churchill Downs event, having made all to equal John Henry`s feat of winning the Turf Classic at the age of nine.
Best of the European challengers was the Michael Jarvis-trained Ela Athena in third place, beaten just over two lengths, with John Gosden`s Commander Collins 11th and Irish colt Chimes At Midnight last of 12.
Further west Hamdan Al Maktoum`s ex-British Altibr got up close home to win the Grade Two Shadwell Keeneland Turf Mile Stakes - sponsored by his owner - at Keeneland.
