Apprentice jockey Philip Cheng died today as a result of injuries sustained in fall at Sha Tin, Hong Kong over the weekend.
Fion Fung, spokeswoman at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin, confirmed that Cheng, 20, had died, but said that the jockey`s brother had requested no further details be released.
Cheng underwent brain surgery at the hospital on Saturday after the incident.
He was kicked in the head and in the chest by his mount My Fourth Wishes after it stumbled having clipped the heels of a rival.
Cheng, who was attached to the stable of trainer John Moore, had won 25 races in the past two years and was considered one of Hong Kong`s most promising apprentice jockeys.
He rode in Britain this summer for trainer Gary Moore, finishing second in an apprentices` race at Epsom.
Cheng is the second Hong Kong jockey to have died in 19 months, following the death of female rider Willy Kan in March 1999
