JEFFERSON SECOND THOUGHTS OVER STAR GALLOP

Trainer Malcolm Jefferson is set to scrap plans to give Smurfit Champion Hurdle hope Dato Star a racecourse gallop.

Jefferson reports the gelding in good shape as he prepares for the highlight on the first day of the Cheltenham Festival, for which he is a 6-1 chance with Ladbrokes.

"He's fine, I'm happy with him but I don't know whether we will give him a racecourse gallop," Jefferson said today.

"We were thinking about it but I don't think we'll bother because he's in smashing order, he looks a picture.

"He's a horse that likes to be fresh and I would hate to take him away and for him to do too much."

Dato Star has won all his three starts this season and leads the challenge to odds-on favourite Istabraq in the Champion Hurdle having beaten Relkeel by 17 lengths at Haydock on his last outing.
