Jagersro Racecourse, near Malmo in Southern Sweden, today announced that it would be staging the most valuable race open to older horses run on dirt in Europe this year.
To be run on Sunday May 14th, the Pramms Memorial, which has Listed race status, will have total prize money of 1,000,000 Swedish Krona (£73,000).
The race, open to all horses of three yrs old and up will be run over about nine furlongs.
The winner will take home 600,000 Swedish Krona (£43,850) and there is prize money down to fifth place.
Announcing the new race conditions, director of racing Bo Gillborg said: "Jagersro Racecourse are pleased to be staging the two most valuable races to be run on dirt in Europe this year, the Pramms Memorial and in August the Swedish Derby.
"It is planned that May 14th will become an important day in the European Racing Calendar and hopefully the Pramms Memorial will be upgraded to be the first Group Race run on dirt in Europe in the next couple of years."
Mark Johnston, whose Gaelic Storm finished third in The Zawawi Baltic Cup at Jagersro last year, commented after the race:
"I have been racing in some of the furthest flung corners in Europe.
"Inevitably, I have encountered tracks of wildly varying standards but none has impressed me more than Jagersro. It is by far the best dirt or all-weather track I have seen in Europe and the facilities for the horses and the general public rank alongside the best in Britain and France".
Also on the programme will be a second Listed race, the Sydsvenskan Jagersro Sprint, run over 5 furlongs with total prize money of 400,000 Swedish Krona (£30,000).
Malmo is ideally located for British trainers, just a short ferry trip from Copenhagen. Access will become even easier when a new bridge opens this summer. Travel allowances will be paid for foreign-trained runners on the day and entries for both races are due on Friday, March 17th.
