Irish jockey Jamie Spencer, who is making a name for himself in England, was today hit with severe disciplinary action by racing`s bosses for contravention of the riding rules.
Spencer, tipped as a future champion by many experts, was suspended for 17 days by the Jockey Club`s disciplinary committee for misuse of the whip.
The offence occurred when he rode Tedstale in the Tote Placepot Nursery at Warwick on September 21st.
The matter was referred to the disciplinary committee by the Warwick stewards because Spencer had been suspended from riding for 15 days for whip misuse within the previous 12 months.
The committee accepted an admission from the young jockey that he had used his whip with his whip arm above shoulder height.
Spencer`s ban, four days of which are deferred until March 21st next year, runs on all the Flat racing days from September 26th to October 10th.
He will miss the entire Cambridgeshire meeting which begins at Newmarket next Tuesday.
Spencer is required to attend the British Racing School to receive instruction regarding his use of the whip on September 28th.
The jockey, who had notched 74 wins before racing began today, refused to comment when approached at Goodwood today.
