Gringo D'aubrelle won a battle with Adamantly Chosen to take the honours in the first division of the St. Peter's Dunboyne GAA Maiden Hurdle.
He was the subject of strong support this morning which saw him go off even-money favourite.
The five-year-old gelding led on his own from the second flight in this two-mile assignment but had Adamantly Chosen for company in the home straight.
The challenger wandered approaching the second last and knocked the hurdle flat but still almost on terms at the last.
The pair settled down to divide the spoils and it was Gringo D'aubrelle who was stronger in the final 100 yards as he got the measure of Adamantly Chosen (11/8) to score by three parts of a length. Ash Tree Meadow was four and a quarter lengths behind this battle in third at 11/1.
Gordon Elliott said: “He’s a nice horse but probably wants two and a half miles. I loved the way he put his head out.
“Davy (Russell) said when he was on his own he was very idle. He galloped all the way up the straight.
“The second horse is a nice horse and we had the experience of a run over hurdles and race fitness on our side.
“We’ll look at Christmas or Naas. I’ll have a word with Noel (Moran, owner) and see what we do.
“The further he goes the better he’ll be.”
Gringo D'aubrelle was last seen winning a bumper at Navan this month by 10 lengths.
