GRAND NATIONAL ATTRACTS BUMPER ENTRY

Last year's winner Bobbyjo headed the biggest initial Martell Grand National field for 14 years when entries closed today.

The Irish gelding is joined by the 1999 third Call It A Day, fourth Addington Boy, fifth Feels Like Gold, sixth Brave Highlander and seventh Kendal Cavalier in an entry of 108 for the Aintree marathon.

Other possible runners include 1997 winner Lord Gyllene and the dual runner-up Suny Bay, who have both been entered despite recent doubts about their racing futures.

Martin Pipe's 12 entries include leading novices Blowing Wind and Gloria Victis, while Charlie Mann has sprung a surprise by putting smart two-miler Celibate in the four-and-a-half-mile showpiece.

France has three in the race, while Norwegian trainer Rune Haugen has engaged Norsk Grand National winner Trinitro.

Notable absentees today included Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup winner Ever Blessed, Boss Doyle and Double Thriller who started favourite last year only to fall at the first fence.

Aintree managing director Charles Barnett said: "This high number of entries is excellent news.

"The 19 Irish entries together with three from France and one from Norway give the 2000 Martell Grand National an exciting international flavour.

"We should end up with a really strong field and it looks like there will be plenty of horses in the handicap."

Weights will be published a week on Tuesday for the National, which has a safety limit of 40 and will again have a 48-hour declaration stage this year.
