Jockeys` championship leader Kevin Darley heads for Goodwood this afternoon hoping to improve on his total of 89 winners in the title race.
Darley was in top form at Newcastle on Monday when he scored aboard Helen`s Day and Soba Jones to go four clear of main rival Richard Quinn.
Helen`s Day was backed from 2-9 into 1-6 before trotting up in the Express Week of Racing Stakes by eight lengths from the running-on Roveretto.
And favourite-backers were back in the ring playing up their winnings on Soba Jones (4-9) who was an equally-impressive victor of the Saltwell Signs Maiden Stakes.
The son of Stewards` Cup heroine Soba made all the running to beat Kind Emperor by four lengths.
Darley said: 'People keep talking about the championship and it`s a long way away but I`ll be giving it my best shot.'
Dakota Sioux (14-1) was another all-the-way winner in the Northern Computer Markets Handicap Stakes.
The win was providing Richard Fahey with some compensation for the tragic death of 'stable pet' Balleswhidden in a freak road accident at the weekend.
The trainer is in Galway where he still hopes to saddle a couple of runners later this week.
He was represented by Grainger Morgan-Evans, who said: 'We saddled her up in the yard this time and she was as sweet as anything but last time at Pontefract she gave us real trouble.'
Heavy rain before racing affected the ground with most jockeys in agreement that the ground was soft by the time of the later races on the card, despite the official going only being changed to good after the third race.
Chaka Zulu was another easy winner, coasting to success under Franny Norton in the Tyne Bridge Handicap.
The 8-13 favourite won with any amount in hand and will surely be out again soon before the assessor has the chance to ruin a favourable handicap mark.
Trainer Tim Easterby, responsible for Soba Jones, had initiated a double when Cumbrian Harmony relished the easier underfoot conditions to make allin the opening Tattersalls Maiden Stakes.
