Frankie Dettori got the best of a thrilling finish on Mutafaweq in the Canadian International at Woodbine in Toronto last night.
He drove last year`s St Leger winner to a nose victory over Patrick Husbands on local hope Williams News, to give Godolphin a second North American Grade One success of the autumn.
Johnny Murtagh had to settle for third place on the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Daliapour, who started 6-5 favourite but passed the post nearly three lengths adrift of the winner.
Mark Johnston`s Murghem finished sixth in the mile-and-a-half turf event, two places behind slow-starting German challenger Caitano in the sixth leg of the Emirates World Series.
Mutafaweq, who started at 4-1, was emulating the success of stable-companion Fantastic Light in the Man O`War Stakes at Belmont Park in New York last month - though initially Dettori thought he had been beaten in the photo-finish.
'I definitely thought I lost and I thought this has not been a great day for me to come all the way here and get beat only a few inches,' he said.
'When my number came up, it was a double surprise. Patrick`s horse went by me a good neck but my horse is very tough and he fought back. It was a very hard-fought victory.'
Success took Dettori to the top of the jockeys` standings in the World Series and extended the lead of Saeed bin Suroor and Godolphin in the trainers` and owners` tables respectively.
Murtagh had no excuses for Daliapour, the fourth horse to be placed in this race for owner Aga Khan who has yet to win in it.
The Irishman said: 'We had a perfect trip and had good position all the way. I hit the front. Frankie with the winner quickened by me but my horse ran very well.'
Dettori had got the worst of a tight finish to the earlier EP Taylor Stakes, finishing third on Innuendo behind Fly For Avie and the Barry Hills-trained Lady Upstage.
