Fusaichi Pegasus produced a devastating turn of speed to land the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs today.
The Neil Drysdale-trained colt was hampered at the start and raced in the rear in the early stages as firstly Trippi and then Hal's Hope cut out the running with the Godolphin horses China Visit and Curule struggling to go the pace.
As the field turned for home Kent Desormeaux produced Fusaichi Pegasus from off the pace to challenge on the outside and the combination hit the front inside the final furlong to settle the issue in a matter of strides.
Fusaichi Pegasus is the first favourite to win the Run For The Roses since Spectacular Bid was successful in 1979.
Aptitude kept on well for second with Impeachment back in third. -PA
