FALLON SUPPLIES DERBY DAY WINNER

Supply And Demand slaughtered his rivals in the opening EDS Handicap at Epsom on Derby Day.

The John Gosden-trained six-year-old was drawn on the wide outside but that proved no bar to success as Kieren Fallon dropped the 4-1 favourite in behind as Yarob and Just In Time set a furious pace.

As the leaders began to weaken in line for home Fallon made his move on the inside and, apart from a slight check, enjoyed a smooth run to hit the front just inside the final furlong.

He stretched clear to score by seven lengths from Gentleman Venture, with Chief Monarch coming late to take third, a further length away.

'This race was the plan and he got a dream run through,' said Gosden.

'I said to Kieren it doesn't look as though we are going to get on any of the new ground on the inside from 14 but he said 'wait and see - I'll drop him in' and it worked.

'They went very fast, which played into our hands.'

Television playwright Lynda La Plante, the name behind the winner's owners Action Bloodstock, said: 'If I'd written something like that people would have said it was over the top. When he was last I had almost given up but then my heart nearly stopped when he started passing everything.'

There are no immediate plans for Supply And Demand and Gosden added: 'He's a six-year-old gelding and he's in the hands of the handicapper now.'

Fallon described the ground as 'beautiful - very good.' -PA
