Kieren Fallon missed the chance of winning a second consecutive Vodafone Derby following the 11th hour withdrawal of King's Best but he wasted no time getting his name on the scoresheet at Epsom and he ended up with a treble.
The champion jockey, successful in the blue riband 12 months ago on Oath, quickly got off the mark on Derby Day 2000 with a superb tactical ride on Supply And Demand in the opening EDS Handicap.
John Gosden's six-year-old was drawn on the wide outside but that proved no bar to success as Fallon dropped the 4-1 favourite in behind.
As the leaders began in line for home Fallon made his move on the inside and he hit the front just inside the final furlong before stretching clear to score by seven lengths from Gentleman Venture with Chief Monarch coming late to take third, a further length away.
'This race was the plan and he got a dream run through,' said Gosden. 'I said to Kieren it doesn't look as though we are going to get on any of the new ground on the inside from 14 but he said 'wait and see - I'll drop him in' and it worked.
'They went very fast which played into our hands.'
The Irishman completed a double when making all on Trans Island, who held off Duck Row by a head in the Vodafone Diomed Stakes.
Winning trainer Ian Balding said of the 5-4 favourite: 'He deserved that after being second in two big races. He was giving the second 5lb too.
'Kieren said he was headed for a trice but Trans Island wasn't having it and fought back.
'He is a natural front-runner and was unlucky in the Lockinge Stakes where he ran a bit keen if anything.
'Kieren judged it beautifully but the horse has had a hard race - even so, the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot could be on the cards.'
Fallon completed a 41-1 treble when producing Astonished with a powerful late flourish to claim the Vodafone 'Dash' Rated Stakes for French trainer John Hammond.
Winning owner David Brotherton said: 'Astonished could now go for a Group Three race in Hamburg in early July.'
Murghem ran on well for Richard Hughes to take the Vodafone International Rated Stakes after Salmon Ladder had set a fierce pace.
Winning trainer Mark Johnston had two other runners - Mardani and Three Green Leaves - in the 12-furlong contest but according to his wife Deirdre Murghem was the main hope.
'With the ground like this he was the one,' said Mrs Johnston. 'He deserved that - he's run so many good races.
'He got a good lead and the good pace suited him.'
The Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes at Royal Ascot is a possible target for the five-year-old.
A change in tactics helped Atmospheric register the second success of his career when securing the Vodafone Woodcote Stakes.
The 9-2 chance made all under Jimmy Fortune in the Listed contest and kept on strongly to defeat Stregone.
'We made a slight mistake with him last time,' said trainer Paul Cole. 'I'm not saying he should have won but it might have been better if he'd bowled along rather than being held up.
'He is a solid genuine type and tries hard. He wants seven furlongs and probably won't be going to Royal Ascot.'
