Trainer John Oxx sent out the winner of the featured Batterstown Handicap at Fairyhouse, but it was outsider D'Anjou rather than favourite Give A Whistle who landed the spoils.
The latter was backed from 2/1 to 6/4 but lost all chance when badly hampered in an incident just over 2f out that also resulted in an injury to Frosty Wind. D'Anjou meanwhile avoided all the trouble, arriving with a sweeping run on the outside under Catherine Gannon to win going away by two lengths.
Oxx was pleased with his winner, saying 'We decided to use different tactics today after he disappointed at the Curragh, and he'll probably go for another handicap now.' The Curragh handler had less encouraging news of Give A Whistle, who returned with a cut leg after her troubled passage.
Apprentice find Pat Cosgrave enjoyed another good day at the office, notching up a double aboard Cherry Falls and King's Opera. The last-named was continuing the rich vein of form of the Michael Grassick stable when staying on gamely to secure the Derrinstown Stud Apprentice Series Maiden at the expense of Oxx's market leader Dafariyna.
