ELSWORTH PONDERS CUP BID FOR PERSIAN

David Elsworth will wait to see how Persian Punch performs in his next race before deciding whether his stable stalwart will run in the Foster`s Melbourne Cup on November 7th.

The seven-year-old has been set to carry 8st 10lb in the Flemington contest, for which the weights were revealed today.

Persian Punch is pencilled in to run in the Great North Eastern Railway Doncaster Cup on Thursday and he could run in the Prix du Cadran at Longchamp on October 1st.

The Jeff Smith-owned gelding won the Prix Kergorlay at Deauville last time out and was third in the 1998 Melbourne Cup.

Elsworth said today: 'At the moment we`re running at Doncaster on Thursday and if we don`t go there we`re looking at the Irish St Leger.

'I`ll speak to Jeff about it after we`ve seen how we get on.

'He`s in great form and the weight is similar to what he has carried before.

'Jeff`s quite keen on the Prix du Cadran, where we`ve finished third before, but the Melbourne Cup certainly isn`tbeyond the bounds of possibility.'
