The odds-on favourite Volatile Lady (4/9 fav) finished second in the opening Hop House 13 Lager Mares’ Maiden Hurdle, but got the race in the Stewards’ room.
The first past the post, Kilcarry View (16s into 8s on track) was disqualified after her jockey Liam Quinlan weighed in 1.1 lbs light, just a fraction over the 1lb which is allowed under the rules.
The Stewards had initially called an Enquiry after the first home had wandered around on the run-in and carried Volatile Lady across the track, but this was rendered academic after the Clerk of the Scales had informed them of the situation regarding the winning jockey.
So Volatile Lady, after some good placed efforts, was awarded the race with Brendan Duke the successful owner/trainer and Ricky Doyle on board. Misty Mountain (9/2) and Zalika (7/1) were promoted to second and third.
Before the result of the enquiry was known, the trainer of Kilcarry View John Ryan commented: “This is a lovely mare and she wants softer ground. We’ve had a few quid on her a few times before and were disappointed but we got her palate done.
“She works like a good mare, and will go to Listowel. She’s a big mare, 16.2, and will jump a fence in time.”
