Paddy Flood's fall from View Mount Prince in the fifth resulted in him picking up severe bruising to his right leg (stood down until Saturday) which left Tom Doyle to deputise for him on Joncol half a length winner of the Irish Racing Yearbook Beginners Chase. Pesoto the clear pace-setter, had looked like he'd done enough but after getting weary in the closing stages, the morning market-mover, Joncol (9/2 into 5/2, returned the 11/4 favourite) picked him up to score by half a length.
Successful trainer, Paul Nolan said: "We didn't want to frighten him on his first run over fences and I'm delighted with the way he picked up from the last. He is just shy of eighteen hands and that is why we went straight over fences with him (won a point-to-point and a bumper in just four previous appearances). He'll now step-up in trip for the three mile Grade One race at Leopardstown over Christmas. He is a proper horse." (EM)
