DUEL COMPLETES FITZGERALD TREBLE

Mick Fitzgerald took the riding honours at Wetherby when registering a 47-1 treble on the afternoon.

The easiest victory of the Irishman's three-timer came on Dusk Duel in the Totty Construction Group Plc Novices' Hurdle.

Nicky Henderson's exciting prospect justified odds of 1-7 with Fitzgerald pushing the five-year-old out to take the £7,200 first prize by seven lengths from Nemisto.

Dusk Duel will now head straight to the Cheltenham Festival next month where he will line up for the Capel Cure Sharp Supreme Novices' Hurdle, for which he is a 12-1 chance with Coral.

"We came here to try and get a bit more education into him," revealed Henderson.

"He loves his jumping - he is a very professional horse but it wouldn't have been his ground today - I'd love better ground for him.

"He'll more than likely go straight to Cheltenham and he goes there with a great chance.

"But we are looking forward to next year when he'll going novice chasing. He'll make a lovely chaser."

Roi De La Chasse returned to hurdling to take the opener in good style for Fitzgerald.

Chris Grant's 11-1 chance led three out in the Spofforth Handicap Hurdle before keeping on to score by five lengths from Master of Illusion.

Fitzgerald was in the winner's circle again 30 minutes later after he had guided New Inn to a six-length victory over Skillwise in the Wetherby Millennium Stand Novices' Chase.

The Steve Gollings-trained nine-year-old was recording the 14th success of his career.

Red Marauder returned from a 441-day absence from the track to take the John Smith's Handicap Chase by four lengths from Flying Instructor.

Norman Mason's lightly-raced 10-year-old jumped to the front at the last under Richard Guest and quickly settled the issue with a nice turn of foot.

"If he's okay in the morning he'll be aimed at the Racing Post Chase in three weeks' time and then the Grand National," said Guest.

"He was good today - just a bit ring-rusty - and he'll come on for the race."

Once More For Luck put some poor recent efforts behind him to land the Richard Whiteley Handicap Hurdle by a length from Eponine.

Well beaten on his last two visits to this track, Once More For Luck was backed from 4-1 to 9-4 to notch his tenth triumph over timber.

Winning trainer Mary Reveley said: "He jumped better today and found the ground a bit easier to run through."

The stewards inquired into the gelding's improved performance.

And the officials noted the explanations of Mrs Reveley and jockey Michael Naughton that Once More For Luck had not jumped fluently on ground softer than he likes on his two most recent outings and is an enigmatic character who needs to be covered up as long as possible.

Caroline Bailey has enjoyed a virtual monopoly in the Nags Head at Pickhill Hunters Chase having won it seven times in the last eight runnings - four times with Teaplanter, once with Teeton Mill and, after today's race, twice with Mr Branigan, who was repeating last year's victory.

Mrs Bailey's only reverse came when Teaplanter finished second to Cab On Target.

Mr Branigan was having his first race for 12 months and Mrs Bailey said: "He has has trouble with his shoulders just below his withers - let's just pray he's sound in the morning.

"It would be nice if he realised his full potential because Ben (Pollock) said he felt like a good horse today."

Mary Reveley, on the mark with Once More For Luck, completed a double when Tees Components held off My Baton to take the closing Weatherbys National Hunt Flat Race.
