DOZEN TO BID FOR LEGER GLORY

Lermontov was the only absentee from this morning`s final declarations for the Rothmans Royals St Leger at Doncaster on Saturday.

The absence of Aidan O`Brien`s charge leaves a field of 12 to go to post for the final British Classic of the season - the biggest line-up since 1982.

Betting for the race is headed by the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Air Marshall, winner of the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York last time.

His Newmarket trainer, who has yet to send out a Leger winner, will also be represented by Dalampour, who finished third behind Air Marshall at York.

Millenary, who beat Air Marshall in the Gordon Stakes at Goodwood, will bid to give John Dunlop his third Leger winner following Moon Madness (1986) and Silver Patriarch (1997).

Other leading fancies to stand their ground include John Gosden`s Savoire Vivre and the Michael Jarvis-trained Marienbard, who split Air Marshall and Dalampour at York.

The well-backed Littlepacepaddocks, the only filly in the race, will bid for a 'home' victory for Yorkshire trainer Mark Johnston.

And Ireland will be represented by Rostropovich (O`Brien), Media Puzzle (Dermot Weld) and the supplemented Chimes At Midnight (Luke Comer).

Doncaster clerk of the course John Sanderson was pleased with the quality of the field for the world`s oldest Classic.

'We`re very happy with the race,' he said. 'It`s nice and open and there appear to be some very good-class horses in it.

'I think it shows that the regeneration of the Leger which we`ve tried to undertake over the last five or six years has worked nicely.

'We`re very pleased with the support we`re getting from owners and trainers and we will try and keep increasing prize money to put the race back where it belongs.'

Sanderson describes the going at Doncaster as 'perfect' and does not expect it to change dramatically.

He said: 'We`ve had no rain of any consequence and the ground is absolutely beautiful.

'The forecast for Friday and Saturday is better than for today and I don`t think the ground will change.

'What we`ve got is perfect ground and after that it`s rather in the lap of the `clerk of the weather` rather than the clerk of the course!'
