DISTANT MUSIC TO SHOW HIS CLASS

Distant Music, Britain's leading two-year-old of 1999, carries no penalty in the Lane's End Greenham Stakes at Newmarket today and should cement his position as 2,000 Guineas favourite with a win.

His opponents look less taxing than the rivals Distant Music saw off in the Dewhurst Stakes over this course and distance last October.

Petrushka should put smiles on the faces of her 1,000 Guineas ante-post supporters by lifting the Group Three Shadwell Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes.

The three-year-old has been backed into second favourite for the Guineas this spring, as highly-encouraging reports of her work on the gallops have emerged.

Petrushka has the look of a Classic filly - she's an attractive chestnut from the family of Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Spectrum and Oaks victor Sun Princess.

And there was much to like about her successful debut in a maiden at Leicester last October, as she overcame initial greenness to lead inside the final furlong for a smooth win.

Trainer Sir Michael Stoute has a fine record with three-year-old fillies and the fact he considers Petruskha ready for this test is almost a tip in itself.

Today's rivals include Seazun and Jemima, winners last season of the Cheveley Park Stakes and Lowther Stakes respectively.

But doubts as to their stamina over this seven-furlong trip - and whether they will train on - make both that pair readily opposable, particularly as each has to concede 3lb.

Easier ground conditions will reduce the effectiveness of many sprinters lining up for the Listed NGK Spark Plugs Abernant Stakes. But they will be ideal for the reappearing Warningford.
