Dermot Weld went close to landing another big US win last night.
The Curragh trainer, whose Pine Dance won the American Derby at Arlington early this month, sent out Theoretically to finish second in the Grade One Del Mar Oaks in California.
His filly stayed on well from off the pace under Eddie Delahoussaye to be beaten just half a length by ex-French No Matter What, who had joined local trainer Neil Drysdale from Jonathan Pease only 48 hours previously.
'She ran good, awful good,' Delahoussaye said of Theoretically. 'She`s a nice filly. Real nice.'
Drysdale was reluctant to take the credit for No Matter What`s win.
'She came to me two days ago,' he said. 'The credit goes to Jonathan Pease I talked to Jonathan nearly every day for the past several days. He sent her over here in great shape.'
Fellow ex-French filly Premiere Creation finished third with La Gandilie, trained at Lamorlaye by Richard Gibson, fifth.
Performing Magic, trained last year by Henry Cecil, gained his third American win of the season when landing the odds in the Grade Three Remington Park Derby last night.
