While One Cool Cat was rising from the ashes to win the Pheonix Sprint Stakes at The Curragh, former Champion Jump Jockey Ruby Walsh recorded three wins at Cork yesterday.
Walsh's three wins were each gained on favourites, with Michael O'Brien's Young Elodie landing the opening seven runner three year old maiden hurdle. Walsh's mount, who touched even money in the ring, was returned the generously priced 4/5 favourite, eventually proving three lengths too strong for Brown Corrig.
Infact, Walsh was expected to complete a double in the next, the Millstreet Hurdle, but The Posh Paddy could find little when asked for his effort by Walsh, at the second last. The winner, Moydrum Castle, made all under Mark Grant to win for trainer David Wachman, whose Damson earlier landed the Group 1 Pheonix Stakes at The Curragh.
Hurry Bob did provide Walsh with the second leg of his hat-trick in the 2m6f handicap hurdle. The 4/1 favourite tracked the leaders throughout and was produced to lead at the third last flight, eventually recording a three length win over Seomra Hocht.
Walsh also collected the Tallow Novice Chase, a race which saw only two of the six runners complete the 2m5f course. The winner, One Night Out, steered well clear of the mayhem, making all for an easy twenty five length win over Moss Bawn.
The Mallow Qualified Riders Handicap Chase provided a controversial outcome with the first three of the first four finishers, winner Teo Peruge, runner-up Ceannairceach and fourth placed Golden Beacon all disqualified after bypassing the fifth fence on the wrong side. The eventual winner was deemed to be Bregogue, who had been beaten a total of nineteen lengths by the disqualified race.
