Connections were dreaming of what might have been after Katy Nowaitee made short work of her rivals in the Spring Mile at Doncaster yesterday. The filly's performance suggested she would have made a bold showing in today's Lincoln.
But she agonisingly missed the cut by one leaving her to tackle yesterday's £20,000 consolation race instead.
'It's a pity she didn't make it because she's won fairly nicely here and this shows that she is very well,' said trainer Peter Harris. 'But at least we've got this one.'
Katy Nowaitee had been a big ante-post punt for the Lincoln and there was plenty of interest for her in the lesser race. Eventually sent off the 7 to 1 favourite she was soon in front of the group racing on the far side.
Katy Nowaitee then began to drift badly right but still emerged the overall leader with two furlongs to travel.
Tantalus, rated a possible Derby prospect by his jockey Michael Hills, gained a workmanlike victory in the Maltby Maiden. Khaled Abdulla's colt swished his tail as he was asked to go and defeat River Bann.
The owner's racing manager Teddy Beckett will be consulting trainer Barry Hills over a possible tilt at the Derby. He said: 'He's still an inexperienced horse and there's a long way to go.'
