Niall Madden's Ursumman lived up to his name when proving a game winner of the J. Winston Building Contractors Handicap Chase at Clonmel today
The son of Leading Counsel chased the leaders before Bobby Molloy produced the gelding to lead after the second last fence - the last being omitted with jockey Tom Ryan taking some time to rise from an earlier fall.
Ursumman battled well for a two length win over the fast finishing Karlo.
Afterwards Madden mentioned 'Bobby gave the horse an excellent ride but my son Niall was originally due to ride the horse but is in hospital getting kidney stones removed.'
He added, with a little understatement, 'Ursumman is a bit of a racehorse and might, in time, make a Galway Plate horse.'
Trainer Oliver Brady was in full voice following Baron De Feypo's win in the Sporting Press Tipperary Perpetual Cup Handicap.
Ridden by Niall McCullagh, Baron De Feypo tracked the leaders before making progress to lead over a furlong out, staying on well for a three length win over Doors To Manual.
Once Brady's self-styled parade ring stand-up show was finished and the Co Monaghan based trainer had regained his composure, he reported 'I knew he couldn't be beaten as the extra trip and the ground were both in his favour.'
Jockey Sean McDermott deserves plenty opportunities and he was seen to good effect on Pat Fahy's No Rows, winner of the Slievenamon Handicap Hurdle.
Fahy later mentioned 'No Rows needs blinkers, loves that ground and will jump fences in time.'
The opening Lynam Merit Median Auction Maiden went to Frances Crowley's Noend.
Noend carried the colours of Fracas, winner of the Derby Trial at Leopardstown last Sunday, and afterwards Crowley reported 'he was quite a big two year old and Pat said he wouldn't like the ground any quicker. '
Trainer Charles Byrnes landed a gamble with Articulation (2/1 - 5/4), winner of the Sporting Press Maiden Hurdle while jockey Tadhg O'Shea produced Eoin Doyle's The Fonze with a well timed challenge to win the Kilsheelan Handicap.
Amateur Jamie Codd gave Myhorsejim a professional ride to win division 1 of the bumper while Pa Murphy, disqualified for failing to weigh in on Carlitos Way in the race landed the concluding race on newcomer Rocsilver.
