Irish trainer Luke Comer believes Chimes At Midnight has a 'reasonable chance' in Saturday`s Rothmans Royals St Leger.
Chimes At Midnight, who is also owned by Comer, has been supplemented for the Doncaster Classic at a cost of Stg£20,000.
Explaining his move the County Meath handler said today: 'He`s always been a pretty good horse.
'It would have cost more to supplement him for the Irish St Leger and the winner`s purse at the Curragh is only half as much as Doncaster.
'So we thought we would go there and have a crack.
'He`ll probably travel over on Tuesday.'
Since being bought out of Aidan O`Brien`s stable for 46,000 guineas at the Newmarket sales the son of Danzig has finished third in the Group Three Meld Stakes at the Curragh, won a Galway handicap and then, following two unplaced efforts, returned to form last time when beaten half-length by Katiykha in the Listed Ballycullen Stakes.
On that latest outing Chimes At Midnightwas wearing blinkers for the first time and was ridden by apprentice Derek Stamp, who, because of the value of the race, could not claim.
'I don`t know what happened with those two duck eggs - I had the horse perfect,' Comer said.
And, explaining his decision to put headgear on Chimes At Midnight, Comer added: 'He`s won before without blinkers and has been genuine in his races but when he went to the front in his work he looked as though he would benefit from them. He`ll wear them again at Doncaster.
'I was thrilled with his run last time. The lad was waving his whip, which isn`t much use when the horse is wearing blinkers, and if he`d given him a crack I`m sure he would have gone on and won.'
Comer is hoping for rain in the Doncaster area and added: 'He was third in a Group Three on fast ground but he prefers some give - the softer the better.
'I think he`s a decent horse and will have a reasonable chance in the St Leger.'
The going at Doncaster is described as good, good to firm in places on the straight course and good to firm, good in places on the round course, watering if necessary.
Chimes At Midnight is a 33-1 chance for the St Leger with both William Hill and Ladbrokes.
