CHIEF SEATTLE RETIRED TO STUD

Godolphin`s Chief Seattle has been retired and will stand at Dixiana Farm near Lexington, Kentucky, in 2001.

The early phase of Chief Seattle`s breeding career will be managed by William Betz of Needham/Betz Thoroughbreds under an agreement with Sheikh Mohammed`s Darley Stud Management, according to the Thoroughbred Times website.

Second to Anees in last year`s Breeders` Cup Juvenile, the son of Seattle Slew was purchased by Godolphin for a reported Stg£2.65m.

Plans to run him in the Kentucky Derby were shelved when the horse developed a fever shortly before the race.

And an attempt on the Belmont Stakes was also scrapped after he failed to please connections in his work.

No stud fee has been announced.
