CECIL HIT WITH FINE FOR DRINK-DRIVING OFFENCE

Leading trainer Henry Cecil was today fined #3,000 and banned from driving for five years after being convicted of a second drink-driving offence inside 10 years.

Magistrates at Ely, Cambridgeshire, heard how Cecil, 57, of Newmarket, Suffolk, struck two elderly people walking along a road.

Magistrate Sue Thompson told Cecil that he had shown 'complete disregard for the safety of other road users'.

The court heard that Cecil had been driving his Mercedes in Ashley, Cambridgeshire, at around 5.30pm on Sunday July 16 when he struck Len Hurrell, 78, and his wife Joan, 77.

Mrs Hurrell suffered a broken arm and Mr Hurrell cuts which required stitches.

Magistrates were told that Cecil had been drinking while at lunch with his six-year-old son Jake, plus a male friend and his child.

Initially Cecil, who was also convicted of drink-driving in 1991, told police that his friend had been driving.

But he admitted his guilt at a police station the following day.

Testsshowed that Cecil`s alcohol reading was 88mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35mg.

Explaining the reason for the fine and ban, Mrs Thompson told Cecil: ``It is a very high reading.

'We feel you must have been quite clearly intoxicated before you got behind the wheel of that car and the fact is that injuries resulted from what happened.'

She added: 'We feel it showed a complete disregard for the safety of other road users.'

Cecil, who was also ordered to pay #69 court costs, was told that his ban would be reduced by a quarter if he completed a drink-driving awareness course.

Magistrates said they had considered imposing a community service order but had decided that was inappropriate after advice from probation service officials.

Cecil agreed to attend the awareness course.

After the case, asked how the driving ban would affect his lifestyle he said: 'I can`t afford a chauffeur.'

Asked whether he wanted to take the opportunity to apologise he said he had already publicly expressed his regret, adding: 'I don`t wish to say anything further today.'
