CASEY OUT TO RECOVER FROM SHOCK SACKING

David Casey is determined to work hard and try to put behind him his shock sacking by Oliver Sherwood.

Casey, appointed Sherwood's stable jockey at the beginning of the season, was given his marching orders after receiving more than his quota of warnings over turning up late for work.

'I must admit I was gobsmacked when I heard what had happened,' said Casey's agent Chris Broad.

'I haven't had the chance to speak to David much about it but both he and I are extremely disappointed at what has happened.

'But he's a good rider and he will be battling on to get over this. He will be getting his head down and trying to ride as many winners as possible.'

Casey has had 87 rides and 13 winners for Sherwood, including Cenkos at the Grand National meeting earlier this month.

However, the jockey was involved in controversy earlier this year at Kempton when appearing to drop his hands and getting caught near the line on Sherwood's Hulysse Royal.

Casey has enjoyed high spots for other stables this season, notably when steering Magic Combination, trained by Barney Curley, to victory in the Imperial Cup and landing the William Hill Handicap Hurdle aboard Martin Pipe's Copeland.

'David can ride at 10st and he's already shown that he can do it in the big races without Sherwood,' said Broad.

'He is looking forward to riding Menesonic for Robert Alner in the Whitbread tomorrow.

'He has told me he definitely wants to ride in England next season, though he will still keep his ties in Ireland.'
